About NJROTC

Q: What does NJROTC stand for?

A: NJROTC stands for Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps.

Q: Who teaches the NJROTC program?

A: The NJROTC program is taught by retired officers (referred to as Senior Naval Science Instructors-SNSI) and enlisted personnel (referred to as Naval Science Instructors-NSI). Commander Walker and 1st Sgt Cox are our SNSI & NSI respectively for the LPK NJROTC program.

Q: Is the NJROTC sponsored by the armed forces or the school district?

A: NJROTC is sponsored jointly by the Navy and the three high schools (Lassiter-Pope-Kell) as a citizenship and leadership development program for students in grades 9 through 12.

Q: Are cadets obligated to join the military after high school?

A: NJROTC is an elective education program resulting in graduation credits. NJROTC Cadets are under no obligation whatsoever to join the military.

Q: Who can participate in the NJROTC program?

A: The NJROTC program is open to every student who meets the school requirements for enrollment in the elective class.

Q: What does the NJROTC teach the cadets?

A: NJROTC teaches self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership skills to help the cadets successfully meet life’s challenges.

Q: How can NJROTC help with future military goals?

A: NJROTC can greatly help students who wish to:

  • enlist in the military service after High School graduation, or
  • for those seeking nomination to any military schools (e.g. Citadel, VMI) or any of the U.S. Service Academies to become future Officers
    • (Air Force-Colorado Springs, Army-West Point, Coast Guard-New London, Merchant Marine-Kings Point, Navy-Annapolis) or
  • for those interested in qualifying for an ROTC college scholarship for any branch of U.S. Military Service to become Officers after completing a 4-year Batchelor’s degree.
    • FYI—Military Schools such as Texas A&M, The Citadel, VMI, Norwich, University of North Georgia are R.O.T.C. programs where all cadets that are accepted to those Colleges/Universities Military programs are on ROTC Scholarships specifically to those programs at those schools. .

Financial

Q: Do parents have to buy NJROTC uniforms and materials?

A: NJROTC uniforms, books, training aids, and other types of equipment are provided to the cadets and paid for by the Navy.

Q: How do cadets pay for dues, competitions and field trips?

A: Payment can be made:

  • payable to LPK NJROTC CPO – dropped off in the classroom office. OR
  • online by requesting in invoice from the CPO Treasurer at LPK.Treasurer@gmail.com

 

Q:  What is a cadet account?

A: Each cadet is allocated an account that serves as a holding account for money earned.  It can be used for paying dues and fees. For every dollar a cadet earns through participation in fundraisers, 80% of the money earned is deposited into the cadet’s account.  This money stays with the cadet throughout their years in the program and rolls over year to year.  The money will transfer to siblings or the general CPO account once the cadet leaves the program.

 

Fundraising

Q: How can parents financially support the NJROTC?

A: Parents can support the NJROTC by:

  • joining the CPO & paying the annual CPO dues
  • participating in the unit-sponsored fundraisers, donating to the gift baskets for silent raffles at events, participating in other fundraisers (e.g. Amazon Smile, Kroger, Publix, etc),
  • encouraging local businesses to support the LPK NJROTC Unit
  • supporting their cadet in enabling them to participate in the unit-sponsored fundraisers
  • Tax deductible donations
    • The LPK NJROTC CPO is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. Any donations are tax deductible as allowed by the IRS.

 

Cadet Participation

Q: What teams can cadets participate in?

A: The NJROTC unit sponsors drill, academic, marksmanship (rifle), orienteering and drone teams and other types of extracurricular activities.

Q: Will cadets have the opportunity to participate in field trips?

A: NJROTC cadets have the opportunity to take part in orientation visits as well as field trips to various naval activities and locations, such as parades, museums and military installations. In addition, in past years the cadets have received “special invitations” to go to Falcons & Hawks games.

Q: How do cadets earn ribbons and medals?

A: Cadets will have the opportunity to earn ribbons and medals through personal and team achievement in military acumen, appearance and team competitions.

Q: Do cadets have the opportunity to earn volunteer hours?

A: Cadets are required to earn a minimum of 8 volunteer hours per semester and it is reflected in their course grade.  Volunteer hours earned can also be applied towards earning of service cord for their respective high school. Volunteer events include fun things such as Art in the Park (Marietta Square), Adopt a Mile, the Dragon Boat race, home football games and other community service events.

Parent Participation

Q: What is the CPO?

A: The Cadet Parent Organization (CPO), provides physical, financial & moral support to the NJROTC program.  Our primary mission is to supports and assists in the implementation of the programs and policies recommended by the Naval Science Instructors of the LPK NJROTC program outside of the classroom. We support the LPK Unit Events (Annual Picnic, AMI, Holiday/Mid-Year Party, Military Ball, End of Year Awards as well as the LPK NJROTC affiliated Extracurricular Teams. 

The LPK CPO is more than a booster club. It’s a “Family” that looks out for each other- parents, cadets & alumni alike.

Q: How are the funds from CPO dues used?

A: CPO dues help with the following:

  • support the unit with administrative costs
  • support the unit in providing some food and incidentals for select unit events
  • defray the cost of events such as field trips, the military ball and the holiday party
  • provide financial assistance for students in financial need so they can participate in the Unit activities & events

Events

Q: What is the Annual picnic?

A: The annual picnic is a LPK NJROTC Unit-wide event for all returning and new cadets and their families. Everyone is highly encouraged to join in on the fun, filled with a cookout, games, prizes

  • This Year’s Annual Picnic will be held on September 7th at:
    • Lassiter High School– 2601 Shallowford Road, Marietta GA 30066

Q: What is AMI?

A: AMI stands for Annual Military Inspection. It is an annual event, held in the Lassiter gym, in which the unit is inspected by the Commander of NJROTC Area 9

  • to ensure that the unit operates and maintains U.S. Navy standards.
    • Individual personnel inspection in issued uniform of ALL cadets for
      • proper wearing of the Navy uniform (cover, appearance of uniform, insignia, name tag, medals, ribbons, shoes, shiny belt buckle, and polished/shined leather shoes
      • personal appearance (hair appearance & cut to U.S. Navy standards, clean shaven)
      • Knowledge
        • General U.S. Navy knowledge, General Orders & Chain of Command)
      • Classrooms, Unit Offices, Unit Supplies & files are inspected & audited
    • The semi-formal inspection includes an exhibition of armed Color Guard & unarmed drill followed with a “Pass and Review” parade of the entire Unit.

 Parents and family members are highly encouraged to attend the Pass and Review portion of the inspection, which includes parade march and demonstrations by the various drill teams. The cadets work incredibly hard leading up to this event and appreciate seeing their parents/family cheering from the stands.

Any current or former Military personnel are highly desired and encouraged to volunteer to assist in preparing the cadets for inspection prior to as well day of AMI. It’s an opportunity to be a positive influence & mentor these young cadets and pass the torch of knowledge, experience & military tradition.

Q: What is the Military Ball?

A: The military ball is the unit’s formal social event held in the spring. Male cadets wear dress blues and females have the option of dress blues or formal gown. An evening of military ceremony and dinner/dance is a highlight for the cadets who consider it “military prom.”

Q: What is Change of Command?

A: Change of Command is the official change of officers from one semester  to another.

  • The Spring semester cadet leaders are announced (Usually in January) during the Annual CPO Chili Cook-off —a parent competition open to all unit cadets and their families.
  • The Fall semester cadet leaders for the next academic year are announced in the Spring (Usually at End of Year Award Ceremony)
